Abstract
One alternative control method is the use of butterfly fruit traps utilizing pineapple as an attractant to capture adult M. plana. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of butterfly fruit traps in suppressing bagworm populations in the oil palm plantation of PT Asam Jawa Torgamba. The research was conducted in Division A, Block A3 of PT Asam Jawa Torgamba using a quantitative method. The treatments consisted of P0 without a fruit trap as the control, P1 with 250 g of pineapple, and P2 with 450 g of pineapple. Each treatment was replicated four times, and observations were conducted periodically for three weeks. The observed parameters included the number of M. plana captured, bagworm population, and bagworm attack intensity on oil palm plants. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the 5% significance level. The results showed that treatments P1 and P2 produced higher numbers of captured M. plana than P0. The average numbers of M. plana captured in P1 were 12.75, 18.75, and 12.75 individuals at 1, 2, and 3 weeks after treatment (WAT), respectively, while P2 recorded 11.50, 15.00, and 11.25 individuals, respectively. The 5% DMRT results showed that P1 and P2 were not significantly different from each other but were significantly different from P0. Therefore, the use of fruit traps with 250 g and 450 g doses has potential as an alternative method for controlling bagworm pests in oil palm plantations and can serve as one component of an environmentally friendly Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program.
